What do the rich owe the rest of us? That’s the question at the center of Private Wealth and the Public Good. We’re a research initiative examining the democratic contradictions of extreme inequality—how immense concentrations of private wealth harm workers, erode civic life, and undermine the possibility of a thriving, egalitarian democracy. Our work extends beyond critique. By exploring the social forces and unexamined assumptions shaping philanthropy, taxation, and the means by which private wealth is accumulated, sheltered, and deployed, PWPG provides organizers, policymakers, and funders with the intellectual resources necessary to build collective power and transform the political and economic structures propelling the defining crises of our time.
